In the European tradition, casual is the dress code which emphasizes comfort and personal expression over presentation and uniformity. It includes a very wide variety of costume, so it is perhaps better defined by what it isn't than what it is. The following are not considered casual wear:
Blue jeans and a T-shirt have been described as the "casual uniform". With the popularity of spectator sports in the late 20th century, a good deal of athletic gear has influenced casual wear. Clothing worn for manual labor also falls into casual wear. While utilitarian costume comes to mind first for casual dress, however, there is also a wide range of flamboyance and theatricality. Punk costume is a striking example. Madonna introduced a great deal of lace, jewelry, and cosmetics into casual wear during the 1980s. More recently, hip hop fashion has played up elaborate jewelry and luxurious materials worn in conjunction with athletic gear and the clothing of manual labor. Casual wear is typically the dress code in which new forms of gender expression are attempted before being accepted into semi-casual or semi-formal situations. An obvious example is masculine jewelry, which was once considered shocking or titillating even in casual circles, and is now hardly noteworthy in semi-formal situations. Amelia Bloomer introduced trousers (of a sort) for women as a casual alternative to formal hoops and skirts. In a recent mirror image, sarongs and other skirts have been embraced by a few men of the European tradition as a casual alternative to formal trousers. Both of these innovations caused great embarrassment in formal circles. Skin exposure is most pronounced in casual wear, since it includes all swimwear, but the trend toward female exposure in the 20th century has also pushed the necklines of formal ball gowns ever lower and the skirts of semi-formal cocktail dresses ever higher. For men, the exposure of shoulders, thighs, and backs is still limited to casual wear. Full nudity is still considered shocking in casual circles, except at very few progressive clubs and beaches. Asked by black cherry - Wed May 21 03:26:59 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Many people think these are the same, but they are not. Full time, like a "day man" who is also a "third key" is on a regular schedule. Part time, such as a waitress working only the lunch rush, is less than full time and still on a set schedule. Everyone else, because they are scheduled at the manager's discretion from cycle to cycle, is casual. Even if you are scheduled for forty hours and the hours do not replicate from schedule to schedule, it is still casual. Also, because this number of hours is not implied, the amount from week to week can change significantly. You would only check PT if you were willing to commit to a long term, regular schedule. Also, you would parenthesize your availability, (E) (W) or (E&W), in both the… [cont.] Answered by john c - Wed May 21 05:52:24 2008 How can I convince my mom that I shouldn't wear my running shoes as casual shoes too?
Q. I used to have some Adidas shoes. Nothing special. I ussed them for running and wore them basically everywhere else. I just got a pair of Asics Gel- Equations for running. I don't want to wear those for casual shoes, but my old ones are torn up and smell horrible! How can I convince my mom to get me new casual shoes? What are some good reasons/ excuses? Asked by smilesandponytails - Sun Jan 27 13:28:42 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. Tell her that running shoes should only be worn for running. If you wear them too often they get worn out and can cause injuries. Depending on how often you run, how many miles per week, you should get new shoes. Running 5-6 days a week, you should change your shoes about every 3 months. By wearing them more often that 3 month span will be shorter. Just let her know that getting a cheap pair of casual shoes will prolong the life-span of your running shoes. Running shoes are more expensive anyways, so you don't want to have to buy them constantly. Basically just tell her you want to prevent injury and save money by getting a cheap pair of causal shoes. I hope this helps, I know how important a good pair of running shoes can be. Answered by College Girl - Sun Jan 27 13:42:08 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "casual" |
