From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. In the European tradition, casual is the dress code which emphasizes comfort and personal expression over presentation and uniformity. It includes a very wide variety of costume, so it is perhaps better defined by what it isn't than what it is. The following are not considered casual wear:
Blue jeans and a T-shirt have been described as the "casual uniform". With the popularity of spectator sports in the late 20th century, a good deal of athletic gear has influenced casual wear. Clothing worn for manual labor also falls into casual wear. While utilitarian costume comes to mind first for casual dress, however, there is also a wide range of flamboyance and theatricality. Punk costume is a striking example. Madonna introduced a great deal of lace, jewelry, and cosmetics into casual wear during the 1980s. More recently, hip hop fashion has played up elaborate jewelry and luxurious materials worn in conjunction with athletic gear and the clothing of manual labor. Casual wear is typically the dress code in which new forms of gender expression are attempted before being accepted into semi-casual or semi-formal situations. An obvious example is masculine jewelry, which was once considered shocking or titillating even in casual circles, and is now hardly noteworthy in semi-formal situations. Amelia Bloomer introduced trousers (of a sort) for women as a casual alternative to formal hoops and skirts. In a recent mirror image, sarongs and other skirts have been embraced by a few men of the European tradition as a casual alternative to formal trousers. Both of these innovations caused great embarrassment in formal circles. Skin exposure is most pronounced in casual wear, since it includes all swimwear, but the trend toward female exposure in the 20th century has also pushed the necklines of formal ball gowns ever lower and the skirts of semi-formal cocktail dresses ever higher. For men, the exposure of shoulders, thighs, and backs is still limited to casual wear. Full nudity is still considered shocking in casual circles, except at very few progressive clubs and beaches. Q. I'm currently working in a shop under casual terms- meaning I'm not entitled to holiday leave, I'm able to refuse hours but likewise the shop do not have to give me hours. I want to leave as soon as I find a new job, basically. My manager treats me like a subhuman, and it's not worth the hassle anymore. My question is, because I'm a casual worker, do I have to give notice? This wasn't outlined when I received the terms of my employment, and I can't get a straight answer out of the HR department. I'd love to just drop my notice off one evening and start a new job the next day, but I'm worried that, even though I'm casual, I won't be able to do this. Anyone any wiser than I am on this? Asked by powerchordantics - Tue Aug 7 11:30:07 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. I think you are wise either way, but you should consider the following; The manger should be listed as a reference on your next application to show that even though he is a jerk you were able to work as a subhuman for a decent amount of time. Its just professional to give a weeks notice to lousy companies. When you recieve th offer from the next company state though you would "Like" to give your company notice and that you are on a casual status and will most likely be able to start right away. Q. I'm going to a post wedding reception tomorrow. It's at 8 Pm and going be a little cool and rainy (according to the weather channel). I've never been to a semi casual reception. What would I wear? I feel weird wearing a sundress during the evening. Any suggestions? Asked by Carole R - Fri May 30 21:20:06 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. A sun dress is probably not the thing unless you have a wrap for it. How about a nice pair of pants and a dressy blouse? Or, any dressy, short dress. Out of respect for the bride, avoid wearing white, black, or red. Answered by Krafty-Kat - Fri May 30 21:29:45 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "casual" |
