From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Jewellery (pronounced /ˈdʒuːəlri/ or /ˈdʒuːələri/) or jewelry (see American and British English spelling differences) is an item of personal adornment, such as a necklace, ring, brooch or bracelet, that is worn by a person. It may be made from gemstones or precious metals, but may be from any other material, and may be appreciated because of geometric or other patterns, or meaningful symbols. Earrings and other body rings are also considered to be jewellery, while body art is not. Also, items affixed to a garment, such as buttons, are not considered to be jewellery, even if they are unusual and highly decorative. Also, items such as belts and handbags etc. are not considered to be jewellery, and are considered to be accessories. The word jewellery is derived from the word jewel, which was Anglicised from the Old French "jouel" circa the 13th century. Further tracing leads back to the Latin word "jocale", meaning plaything. Jewellery is one of the oldest forms of body adornment; recently found 100,000 year-old beads made from Nassarius shells, are thought to be the oldest known jewellery. Jewellery is sometimes seen as wealth storage or functionally as holding a garment or hair together. It has from very early times also been regarded as a form of personal adornment. The first pieces of jewellery were made from natural materials, such as bone, animal teeth, shell, wood and carved stone. More exotic jewellery was probably made for wealthy people or as indications of social status. In some cases people were buried with their jewellery. Jewellery has been made to adorn nearly every body part, from hairpins to toe rings and many more types of jewellery. While high-quality jewellery is made with gemstones and precious metals, such as silver or gold, there is also a growing demand for art jewellery where design and creativity is prized above material value. In addition, there is the less costly costume jewellery, made from lower value materials and mass-produced. Other variations include wire sculpture (wrap) jewellery, using anything from base metal wire with rock tumbled stone to precious metals and precious gemstones. From Wikipedia under the

My sister unearthed a bunch of old 1980's cheap costume jewelry that is made of various types of cheap metal. Is there a way to clean costume jewelry or is there a costume jewelry cleaner I can buy? I'd prefer NOT to buy something. Asked by Mystery S - Sun Oct 5 21:13:27 2008 - - 6 Answers - 3 Comments A. Yes,I know the method because i have done that rightly! You don't need to spend tons of money on expensive cleaners to remove tarnish from your costume jewelry, when you can use toothpaste? Most costly costumer cleaners include a mixture of baking soda and water, which is similar the formulas used in most tubes of toothpaste. Not only will using toothpaste save you money, it is also non-toxic and easy to clean up. Steps: 1. Choose the right toothpaste. The key to using toothpaste as a costume jewelry cleaner is the baking soda. Do not use gel toothpaste, as it usually does not contain baking soda. And, avoid toothpastes that boast tartar-control or whitening power, as they may include chemicals that can harm your silver. 2. I have recently stretched my earlobes to 14 g, so I can take advantage of the cool jewelry. But what do people wear in their lobes? When I look at online shops, everything is clumped together (meaning in the ear section, there is stuff that is more for eyebrows or even tongues), so does that mean anything goes? I bought some longer barbells (5/8in), but I don't want to wear them unless that is where they belong. Q. I have a short golden-yellow prom dress with a black beaded belt from BCBG and I need some ideas about what jewelry I should wear with it. Thanks! Asked by Audrey - Wed May 6 13:57:10 2009 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. If the belt is beaded, I would go with black beads. Try to find something that matches the belt as to really accentuate it and make it stand out. DO NOT wear silver! A lot of factors affect what you should wear exactly. If your dress is strapless, wear long earrings to accentuate your shoulders, but if your hair is up, I would go with a thinner strand so the earrings wont distract from the outfit. Pearls are also a good choice if you ditch the belt, but you may want to keep the belt depending on shape of the dress so your waist wont get lost in the fabric. Hope that helps! :) Answered by EmoHippie - Wed May 6 14:26:04 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "jewelry" Roxbury cops: $16K worth of jewelry stolen from mall
